The Lincoln /County Food Bank opened its doors in July, 1986. A concerned group of local citizens concluded that there existed an ongoing need for a food pantry to serve people experiencing hunger. The Lincoln County Food Bank is a 501C (3) organization directed and operated totally by volunteers with NO paid staff. The Food Bank receives NO government assistance. A volunteer Board of Directors, meeting 4-6 times annually, governs the Food Bank operation. Without the dedication of our board and numerous volunteers, the food bank could not exist!
In 2014, Lincoln County Food Bank joined forces with Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico in Albuquerque, a member of Feeding America and they deliver to us free of charge. This partnership allows us to order some food items at a reduced price from them. In addition we are currently collaborating with other local organizations providing food to help solve the hunger problem in New Mexico.
We are grateful for the various food donations received from our local businesses: Albertson's, Thriftway and Walmart. We purchase most of our food from these Ruidoso businesses as well as Smokey’s in Capitan.
The Lincoln County Food Bank is at a critical turning point in our operation. Many items need to be replaced on a regular basis, including refrigerators and freezers needed to store any meat, bread, eggs, milk, fresh produce or desserts we might receive, and we rely on donors to fill those needs. Each box of food currently costs approximately $24 to fill, so funding is critical to purchase food for a number approaching 4000 boxes each year. Should we not receive adequate funding, we will be forced to reduce the amount of food in each box - a situation we truly want to avoid. Community involvement is crucial!
